24 Hours of Le Mans

Info about Xavier Pompidou’s crash during the Le Mans 24 hours

It was nearly 7 am, Xavier was scheduled to pit in one lap, in the Indianapolis esses just before he was supposed to brake (around 200-210 km/h at this time) the left rear wheel suddenly broke.

Xavier jumped on the brakes but saw two marshalls just behind the barriers were he was going to crash, he realsed the brakes, recover some grip ans start spining the other way in the ¢ escape lane+. He missed the barriers and the marshalls but met a tree.

Xavier was safe, he talk to the radio to inform the team of what happened and went out wihtout needing help of the destroyed #91 porsche.

“I am very very lucky, I am not hurt and I didn’t hit anyone. When the wheel broke I didn’t knew what it was (the suspension, the wheel “), the only thing I was focused on was trying to avoid the marshalls, and it worked. Luckilly for me the Ricardo chassis is very strong (The #91 Porsche was a 2001 spec). The wheel that broke was a brand new one so the manufacturer will have to investigate and find what is the cause of the failure of the wheel.”

After some rest he was in good shape and came back to the track. “I want to thank the friends and people who called me (or tried to) and the ones I saw on the track for their support.”
