Portland Noise Restrictions Force Teams to Change

Local noise ordinances near the Portland International Raceway have forced many of the American Le Mans Series’ Competitors to add mufflers to their cars.

The International Motor Sports Association, the governing body for the ALMS, issued a Competitor Bulletin in late June. The bulletin stated that all cars would be subject to testing during all sessions and would be required to comply with a 115 decibel limit. Cars exceeding the limit would be black-flagged and forced to return to the pits for repairs.
Two of the traditionally loudest cars, the Mazda Rotary-powered BK Motorsports Courage, and the Corvette C6R have both added mufflers to their cars.

“We went down the path of a muffler and have used many special friends from Mazda’s racing past to help us quiet the car. We are doing well with the plan and look forward to a great race tomorrow night,” stated John Doonan of Mazda Motorsports.
