Porsche North America motorsport boss Uwe Brettel has confirmed the German company could return to Le Mans in 2007. The Porsche RS Spyder LMP2 is currently doing a full season in the American Le Mans Series with Penske Racing, but for 2007 the cars will be available for customer teams as well, and Porsche has confirmed their support for any team willing to do the 24 Hours of Le Mans. "Part of our development programme will be to make the car able to finish a 24-hour race," Uwe Brettel, Porsche’s US motorsport boss, told Autosport magazine. "It would make no sense to sell the RS Spyder to customers and not allow them to go to Le Mans. We will definitely support them."
Porsche has not been competing in one of the top classes of Le Mans since 1998. The factory 911 GT1 Evolution cars finished first and second overall. Porsche still remains the manufacturer with most overall victories at Le Mans, the team won 16 times.
