Spyker Squadron Dubai race report

After a great qualifying session yesterday, it was the first time since Silverstone that anything other than a Ferrari had qualified in the top three in GT2, the last race this season for Spyker started great.
The Spyker C8 Spyder GT2R number 79, driven by Jeroen Bleekemolen and Jonny Kane, led the GT2 field in the early stages of the race. But after 7 laps the organisation called Jeroen’s car in for a drive trough penalty as, according to the FIA, Jeroen started too quickly. The number 79 Spyker lost valuable seconds due to this penalty and joined the field in 8th position.
The other Spyker, with Peter Dumbreck and Peter Kox, moved up the grid in the mean while. Peter Dumbreck started form a sixth place but managed to position and maintain himself in a third place. After a quick pitstop, the car was refuelled and Kox took over, the car re-joined the field but just two laps later the car spun as fluids from the car had leaked on the rear tires. Kox managed to bring the car back to the pitbox but the team decided to retire the car after analysis.
Kane and Bleekemolen had no further problems and fought themselves back to a fourth place.
After qualifying it looked very promising, the cars had the pace and the chances for a podium position were there. After an average race there was also good news: after earlier claimed points in the 24 Hours of Spa, Spyker claimed a third place in the FIA GT manufacturers standings, sharing the podium with Ferrari and Porsche.
Spyker Squadron will now prepare themselves for the 2007 season. Two new cars will be built and the team will focus on the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Le Mans Series. The Squadron is also talking with other teams that might run the C8 Spyder GT2R’s in the American Le Mans Series.
