Reigning British GT3 Champion, Leo Machitski, made the step up to GT1 last week when he tested Barwell Motorsport’s Aston Martin DBR9 at Guadix circuit in Spain.
The 24-year-old won the British GT3 class crown last year aboard a Barwell-run GT3 Aston Martin, and is looking at moving up to the GT2 and GT1 classes in 2007. Barwell Motorsport’s ex-factory DBR9 was recently collected from Aston Martin Racing and taken straight to the new-look Guadix facility near Granada, where factory driver Darren Turner and Machitski both drove it last Wednesday. Barwell will continue their GT1 test programme at Snetterton on February 9th.
“We had a fantastic first test with the DBR9,” comments Barwell’s Chris Needell. “Leo did a brilliant job for his first run in a GT1 car, and the car ran like clockwork.”
The Surrey-based team is currently speaking to drivers about programmes in either the FIA GT Championship or Le Mans Series in Europe. Machitski is in the frame to continue his to-date highly successful relationship with Barwell in a selected LMS GT1 programme.
