It was an exciting weekend at Road Atlanta, with the Speed World Challenge championship supporting the American Le Mans Series. You have already read much about the ALMS Petit Le Mans race on our website. The other race that took place at Monza this weekend, is a round of the international GT Open championship. You can read a full feature on that race on the site as well.

Speed World Challenge GT – Round 11 – Road Atlanta
The Speed World Challenge GT event before this weekends’ Petit Le Mans had an accident and showers stir up the race. At the start, two Corvettes and a Pontiac were taken out. This caused a lot of debree to spread over the track, which was cleaned during an 8 lap full course yellow. At green flag rain began to fall, turning into a downpour soon, which took the top 5 cars out. Ron Fellows in his Cadillac then already had switched to rain tires.
At lap 11, again a full course yellow because of the range of incidents on track. This made the majority get to the pits and fit rain tires. Randy Pobst did not. He had qualified first and was not intending to give his position away easily. Not long (and lots of water!) after that, a red flag was pulled out and 5 minutes were given to update the cars to rain specifications. After that change, Pobst was not able to stay in front of Fellows. Fellows’ colleague Aschenbach is in a battle for the championship, so a team order let him pass Fellows with the finish in sight. Fellows fully understands and supports this order.
Randy pobst still leads the championship after this race, with another one at Laguna Seca to go. His advantage to Aschenbach is only 4 points though. Could be a thrilling final…
