The first official test session of the Le Mans Series got underway under clear blue skies and a temperature around 19. As the sun started to heat up the track the first engines were started and when the clock showed 9:00 the cars rolled out of the pit lane to kickstart their season.
Several teams have new liveries on their cars, while some others have no livery as of yet. So a lot of black and white cars today. During the session the red flag came out after a few incidents but there were no serious damages to most cars (apart from the Trading Performance Zytek).
As expected it was an Audi that ended the day on top, but it was only four tenths of a second quicker than the Pescarolo nr 16. Despite it being the first session of the two days the fastest lap by the nr 1 Audi was already seven tenths of a second quicker than last year’s fastest time set by Peugeot.
Quickest in LMP2 was the Porsche RS Spyder of Van Merksteijn Motorsport, the team clocked the fourth fastest time overall, just under two seconds behind the Audi.
In the GT1 category the Luc Alphand Corvette C6.Rs were almost identical in times. While the nr 72 car clocked a 1:55.073 the sister car stopped the clocks at 1:55.105. Both cars completed 35 timed laps.
Porsche was fastest in the GT2 class. The nr 76 Porsche 997 GT3 RSR of IMSA Performance Matmut was quickest in a time of 1:59.410, just under a tenth of a second quicker than the Team Felbermayr Proton Porsche.

That VM Porsche is going to battle with the LMP1’s, thats a sure thing!
I bet that they will fight for overall victory at some circuits, the car is better than a audi in slow corners.
Looks like it’s RS Spyders .v. Audi all over again
VM Motorsport are flying at this early stage…..keep it up jos and the boys from holland!
The first Planetlemans gallery seems to be online: http://www.planetlemans.com/gallery/
Thanks guys!
i reckon the porsche RS Spyder’s may have issues over 6 hours. they dont really have a great reputation for longer endurance races… just look at their history at sebring
i guess the petit le mans is somethin but most other races in the USA are short thangs
bB
whats happened with the creation and zytek factory teams?
I hope pesca can keep this battle up for the whole 2008
The LMP Van Merksteijn with Jos Verstappen goes incredible!!!!
a shame that porsche sandbags in LMP2
Only the factory Rs Spyders (Penske) do sandbag. The Dyson ones do not. So neither the Team Essex nor VM will. I doubt Porsce will be on pace with Audi here. ACO will take measures against that. In the ALMS because of lack of competition in P1 they didn’t fully apply P2 rules. The Penskes are actually a full factory team (they get performance updates first and nearly at every race). Privateers won’t get that luxury. If you want a comparison of how a privateer will do check out the Dyson team. Even then the Dyson team is a very well drilled and funded privateer.
It’s nice that the LMS let Audi keep their #1 designation from the ALMS instead of giving it to Peugeot. I guess since they won Le Mans.
Also apparently it looks like Porsche has given more performance to the updated GT3.
