© Planetlemans – Marcel ten Caat // McNish in the Audi R10 at Paul Ricard
The second session of the Paul Ricard HTTT test started at 13:00 and while several drivers were still enjoying their lunch others went out again to get more mileage. Unfortunately the Trading Performance did not rejoin. The damage sustained in the morning session, when Karim Ojjeh went off and hit the wall, was too much to be repaired at the track.
After five hours of testing and with the sun setting it was Audi Sport Team Joest that dominated the session. The Capello/McNish car was quickest, 1:39.705, while the second R10 of Premat/Rockenfeller was little over a second behind. Third fastest in LMP1 was the nr 5 Team Oreca Matmut car of Ortelli, Ayari and Groppi. They were however almost three seconds behind the fastest of the two Audi’s.
The Epsilon-Euskadi ee1 finally got out of its pit box far into the session. The run did not last long as the car came to a halt at the end of the Mistral straight. Later on in the session it did get in some laps, but no times were known yet.
In LMP2 it was again the Van Merksteijn Motorsport RS Spyder that clocked the fastest lap time. With a 1:44.246 they positioned themselves on top of the LMP2 class and ahead of several LMP1 teams. Team Essex was second quickest in LMP2, over a second behind the Dutch Porsche RS Spyder. Half a second behind the Spyders it was the Quifel ASM Team Lola in third.
Larbre Competition was on top of GT1, its Saleen S7R set a 1:52.486. The other GT1 cars were unable to match this time. The official Aston Martin Racing DBR9, in the Gulf livery, came closest but was still almost 2 seconds behind the Saleen. Third fastest was the nr 73 Luc Alphand Aventures Corvette C6.R, just over a tenth of a second behind the Aston Martin.
Last but not least GT2. It was close at the top in this category, with the nr 76 IMSA Performance Matmut 997 GT3 RSR on top (1:58.249). Defending LM GT2 champion Virgo Motorsport were second with their Ferrari 430. Third fastest was the team Felbermayr-Proton team.

Bugger.
Audi have killed everyone, and the Spyders have Mullered P2.
GT1 seems to be a little scrappy but yet again GT2 has some fun there.
RML have A LOT of work to do.
I think the RS Spyder harms LMP2 a lot more than the R10 do with P1. That spyder must be in P1 or restricted far more. If ACO still wants P1 to win 24h LM they must do something to that RS Spyder. I miss the days that GT1/GTS could overtake P2 from time to time.
GT1 is still fun as with GT2.
I fully agree Kai – what was the outcome again of this whole gentleman/pro-driver debate? If the LMS would opt for that direction they will even make it worse…
if porsche committed to LMP1 with a v10 powered prototype like they originally planned a few years back it’d rock audi’s world…
The Porsche Spyder is an amazing car, but it would not ruin P2 if LMS gets some company to step up like Acura has done in the States.
I have no doubt the Audi will continue to set a very fast pace, but if, at Sebring, they have any extended stay in the pits, I would not be surprised to see A Porsche Spyder on the top step.
I doubt the Pugs will handle 12 hours of the Sebring bumps and last the entire race.
Back to LMS. P2 can be a fantastic class, One only has to lose this gentlemen’s driver mentality. I’m not sure which of the many track layouts they are using at HTTT, but I suspect they have enough tight portions to negate some of the Pugeot and Audi firepower. A layout like at Le Sarthe will clearly have the Porsche following the top of the P1 class. But I would not be surprised again, if many of the other P1 cars cannot keep the pace with the Spyder.
If corvette racing doesn’t get any serious competition in GT1 this year or anything comes up for 2009 they will shut down the factory squad. That will mean more support to privateer. Which they’re starting to do. As you can see the Ollies driving for Luc Alphand from time to time. And GM is sponsoring a second car for Phoenix carsport.
It seems peugeot is sitting back to check up on Audi before they come out. They might be a bit shaken, because Audi got them good at Lemans. Either they sandbagged during qualifying and practice or they gave very high downforce to the cars to make them slower during those sessions.
on here you might be able to find a reason why Porsche is not in P1 when they should be. It’s interesting.
Let me know your thoughts.

Do you hear that?
That was the collective MOAN from so-called purist…
My heavens Porsche will destroy P2, that’s laughable at best.
How about these “lesser” teams stepping up!
Penske sandbagging?
How that IS there pace and Audi struggles to keep up, hadn’t though of that have you???
Opps I meant “How about that IS there pace….”
