© Planetlemans.com - Marcel ten Caat // Speedy Racing Team Spyker on fire at Paul Ricard
The final session at Paul Ricard started at 14:00 on Monday, shortly after the teams had enjoyed their lunch. Shortly after the session had started it was the Van Merksteijn Motorsport Porsche RS Spyder that improved its lap time, bringing it to 1:43.820.
Just before half past two the session was red flagged though as the Speedy Spyker C8 Spyder GT2R caught fire in the last corner. Due to the strong wind the car was quickly completely engulfed in flames and completely destroyed. Andrea Chiesa managed to get out just before the cockpit was destroyed by the fire and returned to the pitlane shocked, but with only a black face from the smoke.
After the track was cleared and the wreck was taken away the session was restarted at exactly three o’clock…
Times will follow later.

Was Speedy racing the old Spyker factory car?
Where are the new Spyker Laviolette GT2 cars? Not yet ready?
It is the old 2007 C8 Spyder GT2R.
Man this is really sad for Spyker, fortunately it was not the new car. The new car will be unveiled in Geneva this week.
That is a really shame.
Great work to capture it, Marcel.
Looking at that picture, thank goodness Chiesa got out OK and I hope he is able to recover from it quickly.
Guys, “half past three” is 15:30… (half an hour past three o’ clock) I’m guessing the car caught fire at halt past TWO, if the session was resumed at three, right?
I seriously hope Chiesa is okay. That looks nasty. The car can burn for all i care, the driver is the most important thing, not the car.
Reminds me of images from days gone past…Very sad for the team. Thanks goodness Andrea was able to escape in time.
Poor old spyker, they dont seem to get any luck.
Glad to hear the pilot is ok.
Hope they can get a new car sorted before the first race.
Spyker shall return, Chiesa is okay it seems and the new car(s) will be available soon, glad it wasn’t the new one.
