The Autodromo Nazionale Monza hosted the second round of the Classic Endurance Racing series last weekend. No less than 46 classic cars were entered for the CER round on the historic Italian track, several cars returning to the circuit on which they raced in the seventies.

At Monza the battle throughout the weekend was between the Porsche 936 of Jean-Marc Luco and the Lola T280’s of Michel Quiniou and David Ferrer. In the free practice session it was Quiniou who was quickest in his red Lola beating the yellow Lola of Ferrer and the Porsche of Luco. The three drivers were the only ones to stay below the 2 minute lap time mark.

In the first qualifying session of the weekend Quiniou was quickest once again, setting a 1:54.998, ahead of the Lola T70 Mk III B of Stefano Rosina. Jean-Marc Luco was third fastest. The second qualifying session saw lap times dropping even further. As the chequered flag came out it was Jean-Marc Luco who had took his Porsche around the track in a time of 1:51.634, over a second quicker than David Ferrer and almost 2.5 seconds quicker than Quiniou.

Jean-Marc Luco took maximum advantage of his pole position for the one-hour race and after having cleared the Prima Variante for the first time he slowly but steadily got away from his opponents. Thirty-one laps later Luco steered his Porsche 936 out of Parabolica and passed the chequered flag as the winner of the Monza race. 47 seconds behind him it was Michel Quiniou who finished in second place, with David Ferrer one minute and 16 seconds behind Luco in third place.

Next weekend the third round of the Classic Endurance Racing series will take place at another historic track, the Spa-Francorchamps circuit in the Belgian Ardennes. The full entrylist of the race can be found here.
