Our Portuguese friend Hugo Ribeiro informs us about interesting news coming from the Quifel ASM team. According to a short interview from Miguel Paes do Amaral that was published in the Portuguese Autosport magazine, the ASM Team will acquire a new prototype in 2009 for running in the LMS and the Le Mans 24 hours.

Amaral, car owner (and a well-known sportscar collector) said that he will not sell his Lola B05/40 (”it’s a piece of my memories” he said in the printed version of Autosport) and confirms that the new prototype will be an LMP2 because “ACO still is orienting the gentlemen-drivers for this category”. It will be a 3 years project as stated in the article.

Portuguese motorsport news web portal sportmotores.com goes even further and affirm that the new ASM LMP2 will be a choice between the Zytek 07s and the Lola B08/80 coupe. In the beginning of the 2007 season Miguel Paes do Amaral said that the Porsche RS was not an option because of its “elevated costs”.

Obrigado Hugo for your important news

  1. pity the car won’t race on, it looked fantastic at LM and ran well for the best part of the race too. Good to see any team planning for the future though.

  2. The lola coupe is faster, only lacking reliability at the moment (for both P1/P2) so if the engine are sorted out next year I can’t see why not going for a quicker Coupe.

  3. Although knew they’ll have a dificult year, with the Porsches, they refused the ‘jump in the dark’ (without enough finantial support from the factory, they admitted) that the Mazda engine meant, and decided to keel faithfull to the package they already knew so well.
But after three years its a natural decision, to move on and, as a portuhuese fan, i just hope they find a major sponsorship, in order to make a realstep forward and not just a change of outfit.

  4. Interesting how they feel the LMP2 class is for privateers

  5. Well, that’s how the ACO wants to brand that class. As well it should be, I think - nobody is going to beat Audi and Peugeot at their own game and unless we see some big factory efforts in P2 (like we have in the ALMS) I think it’s the better choice.
