Into the final two hours of the race. Since the action has not been here on the track for a while there are lots of people who have scrambled to see the Formula One farce…errr race. We can reveal that Felipe Massa is leading Lewis Hamilton after 1 lap. So enough…back to endurance racing!
14:09- Van de Poele is one lap ahead of Lemeret. Will Van de Poele remember his last from 2007?
14:10- BMS Scuderia Italia looks certain to win the GT2 class, two laps lead over the number
14:13- And it is raining again.
14:14- Kessel Racing in the pit lane, having some trouble with changing the tyres.
14:22- Gigawave is in the pit.
14:30- As the #1 Maserati comes into pit lane the Scuderia Ecosse and AS Events Ferraris are being ordered to turn their lights on.
14:32- The Sport Garage #174 is stopped at turn 4. Local yellow flags.
14:36- Henri Moser has hit the tyres at turn 7. But he is able to continue without much visible damage.
14:49- Even though it is ninth overall and behind four GT2 cars the Lamborghini is still lapping the Spa track.
14:50- BMS Scuderia Italia’s Davide Rigon is in the pit.
14:51- The Sports Garage is still parked next to the track. Lesoudier is working hard on the car to repair it so he can at least make it to the finish.
14:54- Lemeret is in the pit. He will hand over the car to Pierguidi who will finish the race.
15:03- Scuderia Ecosse’s Jamie Davies has returned to the track.
15:14- And more rain…
15:19- And the sun is back, but the spray is coming from the cars.
15:21- Van der Poele runs wide on the slippery track. A first warning?
15:23- At Stavelot it seems to rain very hard. The number 1 Maserati literally appeared out of the clouds and spray.
15:25- Pierguidi in the pit. As he comes out the Gigawave is close on his tail
15:30- Half an hour to go..Van der Poele is still going fast, but the laptimes are over 25 seconds slower due to the wet track.
15:37- The third placed car in the G3 group, the AS Events Ferrari 430 GT3, has stopped at turn sixteen. Drama for the French squad as there are only just over 20 minutes to go.
15:40- And it rejoins…in time to keep its big lead of 3 laps over the fourth placed GT3 car.
15:42- The two Vitaphone cars have formed a pair for the photo at finish.
15:45- Fifteen minutes remaining…Eric van de Poele is in for a splash-and-dash.
15:50- Ten minutes remaining.
15:52- The rain has disappeared, blue sky is getting visible through the clouds. What cars will come out of the pit lane to do a final lap and be classified (and score points).
15:53- Peter Kox is still lapping quickly, 14 seconds a lap quicker than the CR Scuderia that is in front of him. Looks like Kox wants eighth place overall and not ninth.
15:54- Another fast lap by Kox. Way quicker than the rest of the field and another sixteen seconds gone from Mullen’s lead.
15:55- The pitlane is already getting crowded with supporters and VIPs while Matteo Malucelli is in the box for his final stop. Welcome to Spa…
15:56- Malucelli gets back on track just behind the two Maserati’s. The Prospeed Porsche G3 has just passed the leaders, the battle in G3 is far from over.
15:59- Several cars are passing the leaders as several battles.
16:00- The Maserati’s slow down to make a nice photo finish, but cross the line a few seconds too early, so another lap for the two Vitaphone cars.
16:01- Peter Kox passed Tim Mullen and has moved the Lamborghini into eighth place overall.
16:02- And now the Maserati’s are flying again, overtaking the G3 Porsche. As they cross the line it is Eric van de Poele who once again shows he can do it. Vitaphone secure a brilliant 1-2 victory, trashing the opposition. The Gigawave Aston Martin is in third place.
BMS Scuderia Italia repeats its 2007 win, this time in the Ferrari 430 rather than the Porsche 997. Prospeed Competition takes second place with the #61 Porsche and the #50 AF Corse Ferrari 430 in third place.
Mühlner Motorsport has done it again. After a win in 2007 it is a clean sweep this time. Pole position and first and second in the race. The #123 Porsche 997 GT3 wins, beating the sister car #124. AS Events claims third place despite the scare about half an hour before the end.
Why would those Ferrari’s have to turn their lights on in the daytime? That’s an ACO rule, not FIA…?
Lambo had a nice long run on the TV… good for them, good for sponsors, good to work out any niggling problems with that car.
GT3 (Sport Garage?) Ferrari stopped and the driver is looking pathetic trying to fix it. Shades of Helio at Watkins Glen.
What tires are they putting on the Aston? DT didn’t seem to like the choice.
It was Phoenix’s race, they were the class of the field but bad luck hit. (They really only made one mistake, tire choice, and it didn’t hurt them all that badly.) But ifs and buts don’t win races. Congratulations to Vitaphone, they were literally flawless, and good job to BMS on two consecutive wins with two different cars.
