Belgian G&A Racing got the official licence of SRO to build the new BMW E92 V8 Coupé GT4 for the GT4 European Cup. G&A, managed by Guino Kenis, already developed the BMW Z4 Coupé GT4, a car that proved very successful in both the 2007 and 2008 editions of the GT4 European Cup. The car took several victories in the first two editions of the GT4 European Cup and missed the 2008 title by a glimpse. Guino Kenis is both consultant and tuner for the BMW M3 project and as he also runs an official BMW dealership, he is of course very familiar with BMW.
“Thanks to the excellent results with the BMW Z4 Coupé, we now become the exclusive tuner of the BMW E92 M3 V8 Coupé”, explains Guino Kenis.
“But this does not mean the end of the BMW Z4 Coupé. The balance of performance in GT4 results in a well-balanced field and all cars have similar performances, so the BMW Z4 will not be outpaced. The new BMW M3 Coupé is a very interesting car marketing-wise, but of course, will also be very competitive. So both the BMW Z4 and BMW M3 Coupé will be on the starting grid of GT4-races in 2009. The first roll-out will be in January, while the balance of performance tests – by an official SRO driver - will take place in March on the HTTT Circuit Paul Ricard. I think both the BMW Z4 and the BMW M3 Coupé will be front runners in GT4 next year.”
G&A will get logistical support from BMW Motorsport and BMW will of course keep an eye on the progress of the car in GT4.
G&A Racing will run four cars in a renting program and will also build cars for customers. But all cars can benefit from service from G&A in between the races and the transport of the cars can be done by G&A as well. G&A will also be at every race, assuring technical support.
G&A Racing will be very busy in GT4 European Cup, but the team will also defend its European rally cross title entering again a BMW 120i for Belgian Michaël De Keersmaecker.
BMW Z4 = Sports car
BMW M3 = Touring Car
A simple equation really. Regardless of its performance and undoubted engineering pedigree the M3 aint a sports car.
Why will it get a look in in the ALMS?
Mike
Here’s the simple equation. BMW just wants to show off its newest model because they spent a pretty mint developping it.
The Z4 is 4 years old, and starting a racing program with an outgoing model is not something a savvy manufacturer does.
@ Mike Humphries
Indeed, the Z4 is more of a sportscar than a M3.
But tell me. How do you rate the following cars?
Ford Mustang (produced in even larger numbers than the 3 series Coupé, based on large volume production technology and platform)
Nissan 350/370 Z (coupé based on a shortened Nissan Skyline / Infinity G37)
Audi TT (highly developed VW Golf)
The fact is that due to even higher developing costs and environmental and safety regulations, more and more sportscars will be based on and depend on series production engine and drivetrain technology or even complete series production platforms.
About the M3 GT4.
Any news about (potential) customers or the series where these M3’s can be seen next year?
