BMW of North America, LLC and Rahal Letterman Racing announced today the addition of Tommy Milner and Dirk Müller as BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team drivers in BMW’s return to American Le Mans Series competition in 2009. The duo will join Bill Auberlen and Joey Hand as the drivers for the team’s inaugural two-car effort in the ALMS GT2 class in 2009.

“With the high level of competition already established in the ALMS GT2 class, the BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team is moving into a very fast lane,” said Martin Birkmann, BMW of North America Motorsports Manager. “Previous BMW M3 and ALMS GT racing experience were critical parameters in our driver selection process. The addition of Tommy Milner and Dirk Müller to Bill Auberlen and Joey Hand gives us a highly qualified driver lineup.”

Milner, 22, of Leesburg, Va., began his racing career in 2004 as a Formula BMW USA Junior driver. The son of Prototype Technology Group owner Tom Milner, Tommy would join PTG later that year and qualify on pole position in his very first professional sports car race. He made his ALMS debut in 2006, and went on to join Rahal Letterman Racing in 2007, co-driving the team’s Porsche to five podium finishes and fourth place in GT2 driver points. When RLR decided to forego the ALMS in 2008, Milner joined the Panoz where he co-drove with Joey Hand, finishing on the podium in the season’s final race.

“I’m very pleased to be racing for BMW,” said Milner. “Following the start of my career as a Formula BMW Junior driver in 2004, I’ve also had some of my best results driving previous generation M3s. I hope to continue those successes in 2009 for the BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team.”

Müller, 33, originally from Burbach, Germany, is considered to be one of the best GT drivers in the world. With vast experience in sprint and endurance racing series in both North America and Europe, Dirk Müller has raced in five previous ALMS seasons between 1999 and 2008. Winning the ALMS GT driver’s championship in 2000, Müller became a BMW driver for the first time in 2001, continuing through 2005. Driving a BMW M3 GTR in 2001, Müller raced to five podium finishes in a season that saw the BMW sweep all ALMS GT class titles. Müller also co-drove the M3 GTR to victory in the 2004 Nürburgring 24 Hour race.

“I am honored to be part of the BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team and to be working with BMW of North America and Bobby Rahal,” said Müller. “I enjoyed being part of the BMW family from 2001 until 2006 so this makes me feel like I am home again. I am also happy to have the engine back at the front of the car!”

The BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team is currently preparing its BMW M3 race cars at its Hilliard, Ohio shop in advance of the January 26-28 ALMS Winter Tests at Sebring International Raceway. The team recently conducted its initial M3 testing by making runs at Road Atlanta and Sebring.

“Adding a pair of drivers with the skills and road-racing acumen of Dirk Müller and Tommy Milner really increases the overall talent level of the BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team,” said Rahal Letterman Racing co-owner Bobby Rahal. “We have worked with Tommy over the last two years in a number of different cars and he has been a quick study and taken each of our cars straight to the front! Dirk has long been recognized as one of the top talents in road racing and we think the addition of Milner and Müller to our team gives us one of the best lineups in the ALMS GT2 class.”

The BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team will begin the 2009 American Le Mans Series season on March 22 at the 12 Hours of Sebring.

  1. Apparently it seems like Rahal Letterman is working with Team PTG on this project.

Tafel Racing will miss dirk Muller. Dominik Farnbacher might want to reconsider resgning with them Hopefully Tafel gets a top ferrari ace again…Rob Bell, Bruni…

  2. I predict Tommy and Dirk will outdo Joey and Bill if team orders are not involved. And they shouldn’t be.

  3. from some aspects it’s a pity BMW’s WTCC commitment will prevent the best pairing from going there but I suppose it makes the competition fairer. I concur that we’re unlikley to see a Panoz return though.

  4. Who said PTG was working with Rahal on this project? Milner drove for Rahal in 2007. This time last year, I didn’t expect PTG to return for 2008, but they did and finished third at Laguna Seca with Yokohama. Will Rahal really use Dunlop tires?

  5. I agree that Dirk will be fastest of the four. Milner, I’m not so sure. And I too was hoping that Farfus and Priaulx would come over to show their stuff. I don’t really see any PTG involvement other than a rostrum of former drivers. I think Dennis Swan is running this program.

  6. How did Dirk do last year in the Ferrari GT2?
In touringcars Dirk always was a bit of a bangerracer in my opinion. That’s not a very usefull ‘quality’ in endurance racing…

  7. What does that leave for Tafel Racing? Jim’s car and Dominik? Will Dominik race for Farnbacher Loles?

  8. If i remember right Dom has already resigned for Tafel, how could he race for Farnbacher Loles when they have already announced Dirk Werner and Wolf Henzler in there single car.

  9. Jim Tafel needs to find a top ace fast. If not Dominik’s prowess won’t show results.

I’m sure there’s a top ace somewhere in the FIA or LMS who wouldn’t mind going against the very best teams and drivers. Jim Tafel just has to have the will to write the check.

Farnbacher Loles can put out as many cars as they want Funding is not an issue for them, especially their US operations. In select Grand Am races they entered an additional Porsche Cup just because he wanted to race them. In the season finally I was afraid he would take out the title contenders.

His daddy own the outfit he can get a seat anywhere he wants, ALMS, LMS, or Grand Am. Gregory Loles just runs the US operation. I think Dominik will stay with Tafel just to be a good sportsman. Besides he might be the team leader this year…maybe.

  10. When corvette comes in during the middle of the GT2 season they will be going for wins with no regard to who the title contenders are.

It will be fun watching them take away points from teams that are just tring to stay in the hunt by racing for points. Flying Lizard did that quite a few times.

Hopefully Aston MArtin will join this fray with the GT2 at least in sebring petit and laguna with a lineup like Enge Garcia, Turner.

  11. Don’t count on Corvette to come to GT2 just yet. We have to make sure that GM has money to race with first. I think we will be lucky to see a Aston of any kind this year. Its to bad that times are so tuff right now. With Vette racing potentially jumping to GT2 that leaves GT1 open for privateers to come in again.

  12. Drayson Racing will be at the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring with Aston Martin. Corvette Racing has confirmed plans and drivers for 2009.

Why only one BMW so far for Sebring’s entry list?
