Once more the ACO managed to bring together a fabulous list of cars for the annual Le Mans 24 Hours. Despite the economic downturn that is felt throughout the world the 2009 edition looks better than ever. The 77th running of the Le Mans 24 Hours looks to become a Peugeot vs Audi battle again!

Let’s take a look at the entire list of 55 cars as well as the 10 cars on the reserve list. 21 LMP1 cars are on the main list. 12 LMP2 cars make it a 60 percent prototype field. GT2 outnumbers GT1 this year again, with 14 GT2 cars against 8 GT1s. First…LMP1!

Highlighting the 2009 Le Mans 24 Hours will be the battle of the manufacturers in the LMP1 class.
Peugeot is back at La Sarthe for yet another attempt to win the mythical race. In recent years the Audi R10 beat the Peugeot 908 and the French squad will do everything to beat Audi this time, the first time Audi uses its new R15 TDI in Europe. On this attempt Peugeot has added a fourth car, run by the Pescarolo Sport team.
Audi’s battle for another victory with the R15 will be supported by two privateer Audi R10s in the hands of the Kolles team.

With nine diesel-powered cars the petrol engined cars will have a hard time taking a top finish. Nevertheless Aston Martin Racing has taken up the challenge by entering three brand new Lola Aston Martins, as well as the 2008 Lola Aston Martin in the hands of Speedy Racing Team Sebah.

Oreca’s Hugues de Chaunac must be happy to see no fewer than three Courage-Oreca LC70 cars on the grid. Two of them are run by Team Oreca, with a third one to be run by newcomers Signature Plus.

The Zyteks are back as well, with Team LNT and Strakka Racing both entering a Ginetta-Zytek 09S. Like the Courage-Oreca cars these Zyteks should have a real good day to be able to beat the diesel cars. The same can be said about the lonely LMP1 Pescarolo Judd, which needs a brilliant drive to take the ‘best petrol car’ title.

Epsilon-Euskadi is hoping to debut its new Epsilon Euskadi ee2 Judd at Le Mans and has opted to miss the opening rounds of the Le Mans Series. Taking into consideration the progress the Epsilon-Euskadi squad made in the races they did last year it remains to be seen if this is indeed a wise decision.

A rather surprising addition is the Creation Autosportif team. Mike Jankowski decided not to close the doors on the team when several other team managers did and moved the operation to the USA. Despite not lodging an entry for the Le Mans Series nor the American Le Mans Series the squad seems positive for a return to the world’s most important endurance race.

  1. The LMP1 section of Le Mans looks very strong. I look forward to seeing the Sebring 12 hours to give us a small idea of how well the Audi vs. Peugeot battle will progress. Will Audi’s new R15 be faster than the R10 to take the battle to the 908? And will it be as bulletproof as before, or will more problems creep into the car as per last year?

Aston’s foray looks to be the first more serious comparison of petrol versus diesel power. Will the Lola-Aston Martins be fast enough and efficient enough to keep up with the diesels? If I remember rightly, the petrol cars do up to 2 – 3 laps less per tank of fuel even with the change in the fuel tank sizes for the diesel cars, so the Astons will have to be faster or as fast as the Audis and Peugeots to keep pace. It would be awesome to see a Audi vs. Peugeot vs. Aston battle to the last few hours.

The ‘customer’ Audi, Peugeot, and Aston Martin cars are interesting to say the least. It’s similar to taking an ‘each way’ bet.

The remaining privateer cars add spice to the entire division, as the various cars have been quick in testing, so it should be very very very interesting!

  2. Pescarolo’s 908 can be very strong. Henri has a team of proven prototype drivers he can call on. At the forefront of them is Romain Dumas. I don’t think he’ll pass up the opportunity.

But it seems a little late now. Most people has envisioned Peugeot hooking with Pescarolo a while back. Just like Audi did with Champion Racing in the U.S

  3. As someone who is relatively new to the Le Mans 24 hour who would you say are the most well-known drivers who will be competing in the 2009 race?

  4. Sebastien Bourdais would be the most popular overall I would say. He’s one of the most accomplished also.

  5. For Americans Johnny O’Connel is a well known veteran with Corvette racing, and Patrick Long is a very fast young gun, with the IMSA porsche.

Romain Dumas who might race with Pescarolo might get to drive the diesel 908, if he does he might be one to watch.

The #1 Audi has Tom Kristensen and Allan McNish, and Dindo Capello is a heavyweight contender.

David Brabbam in the Peugeot is interesting as well.

In P2 the Porsche supported team: Team Gos has Seji Ara a quick pilot and he won the 24h with Tim Kristensen in the R8 before, he has good chances of winning P2 with Saascha Massens. And Team Essex with Emmanuel Collard, this year they have michelins not Dunlops.

  6. Bourdais being born in the Sarthe region same as the 24h, and being a current F1 pilot he commands much publicity. Not just in europe but in the US as well since he was
    4-time champ car champion.
