The second free practice took place in complete darkness, the track only visible in the headlights of the cars and some floodlights that were placed around the track. Due to the lower temperatures the lap times were a bit quicker than they had been in the first practice.
The two hour long session was interrupted by a red flag once, but fortunately it was restarted a couple of minutes later when the track was cleared. From that moment on the track conditions improved and lap times tumbled down.
Eventually it was Danny Watts who posted the fastest time in his Strakka Racing Ginetta-Zytek 09S, half a second ahead of the Pescarolo Sport #16. The two Team Oreca Matmut AIM cars finished the session in third and fourth place.
The #14 Kolles Audi R10 TDI was surprisingly fast and ended the session in fourth place, ahead of the two Aston Martin Racing Lola Astons.
Quifel ASM Team was fastest again in the LMP2 category, the Portuguese team enjoying the night session as they blew away the opposition. The Racing Box Lola #29 was second fastest but already at a second and a half, while the G.A.C. Racing Team took a surprise third place this session.
Down in the LMGT1 class it was the Corvette C6.R of Alphand Aventures that did what it had to do. The gap between the Corvette and the Saleen was 1.5s at the end of the session.
One second was the gap between the fastest and second-fastest car in the LMGT2 class, with Team Felbermayr Proton being the quickest GT2 team around the Portimão circuit. The Porsche 997 GT3 RSR posted a lap of 1:45.140 as opposed to the 1:46.152 set by the FBR Ferrari #90. IMSA Performance Matmut was third fastest, their Porsche just 0.05s behind the Ferrari.
