The World Motor Sport Council of the FIA met in Paris today. As well as many decisions that were taken the provisional calendar for the 2010 FIA GT1 World Championship was also confirmed. A full calendar, with some surprises.
The provisional 2010 calendar is:
April 4 // Yas Marina, Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates) **
April 18 // TBA (South Africa) *
May 2 // Silverstone (Great Britain)
May 16 // Brno (Czech Republic)
May 30 // Paul Ricard (France)
July 4 // TBA (Canada) *
August 1 // Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium)
August 29 // Nürburgring (Germany) *
September 12 // Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, Portimão (Portugal)
October 3 // Hungaroring (Hungary)
November 14 // TBA (China) *
November 28 // TBA (Brazil) *
*Subject to the ASN’s confirmation
**Subject to the homologation of the circuit.
The first big surprise is the start of the season at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi. After being dropped from the 2009 the San Luis event in Argentina was confirmed by SRO as the season opener of the 2010 championship. In today’s announced calendar there is no trip planned to Argentina, the only race in South America currently on the schedule is set to take place at a yet unknown circuit in Brazil.
GT1 World Championship races were also expected to take place in Australia, Bulgaria and Russia, but neither of these three countries are on the current provisional calendar. The race in Bucharest, Romania that was replaced with a round at the Hungaroring this season is not on the calendar either, the Hungaroring is again taking that spot.
A trip to Canada is planned for July 4th. The circuit that the FIA GT1 World Championship will use is still to be announced, but with the Fourth of July being a national holiday in the United States several American fans could make the trip and celebrate Independence Day on the other side of the border, if the race is held close to the US.
On August 29 the GT1 cars will race around the Nürburgring Grand Prix circuit. According to German sources the ADAC Nordrhein e.V decided to replace the Le Mans Series 1000 kilometers of the Nürburgring with the new GT1 World Championship as they were not happy with the Le Mans Series organisation and with the new FIA GT championship they hope to attract more spectators.
With circuits yet to be confirmed for South Africa, Canada, China and Brazil changes on the current schedule are more than likely.
one single question to SRO : where is San Luis ?
Yes what happened to the “we wont run San Luis at then end of 2009, so that we can have it as the opening round of the 2010 World Championship”?
for China I guess it will be Zuhai ! good crowd for past FIA GT races there…
This is the most ambitious, likely to fail calendar I think I’ve ever seen. Noone has the money to run a team for the full series! Of Mice, Of Men…
Why was the ADAC not happy with the LMS organization?
The race in Canada had better be at a gorgeous track and not some place boring.
What do the sponsors think?
no italy date?!! why?!
Guys, this championship will be by far cheaper for the teams in comparison with the “old one”. Every track has to pay to host a round. They’ll use this money to pay travel costs. It’s likewise WTCC and look where they are going. Because promotors have to pay, i think San Luis fell through. You must also know that SRO South America is situated in Brazil, not Argentina. I suggest you all to read ( reports of ) the press conferences during the past two years. It’s a great business plan and the most interesting “new organisation” by far for a long time.
On the other hand, this is the first scheme. According to SRO, there wil be 10 (!!) events and they hope to make it 12 in december. So, let’s be patient.
A round in North America…That could entice some ALMS and GRand Am teams to do a one off race. And of course US based fans like me can get to see it live (if it happens).
No need for it in Yankland… You guys are too wrapped up in Nascar and Drag Racing.
Jake, you are too NEGATIVE. Get a life…..
Jake seems to be right, I spent 4 weeks in North America in 2007. (i went to 2 ChampCar events) But watching the racing channel, so many Nascar shows, and side shows.
That seems to be all they show. I would gone crazy within a few months. Then got home to my MotorsTV in France
So sad Circuit Zolder will not be present anymore
.
and the night race @ Adria too has gone, a real shame, I liked it so much…
No races in italy??
Jake is a moron…
We are not so much wrapped up in Drag Racing and NASCAR to not go to a FIA GT race since its SO RARE it comes to North America.
I’m not sure what track they’ll run and what time of year.!
It might be “3 Rivers” as the Nationwide/Grand Am race is in Aug. ALMS@Mopsort is in late Aug as well, so that would leave pairing with IRL somewhere NASCAR Canadian Tour.
Since its World, it will have a “World” feed, which means since coverage was such a mess this season, I should be able to see all the races next year without issue.
