Five months before the start of the new FIA GT1 World Championship Swiss Racing Team has confirmed it will be racing in the championship as of next year. The Swiss team, active this season in the ATS Formula 3 Cup in Germany, will be running two Nissan GT-R cars in the World Championship and will be an “Official Nissan Customer Team”.
The team is run by Othmar Welti. The Swiss engineer was technical director at Jetalliance Racing and KplusK Motorsport in recent years and has now decided to bring his own team to the FIA GT1 World Championship. “After providing technical support for teams like Jetalliance Racing and KplusK Motorsport in the GT1 championship recently, the time has come to take charge ourselves. We’re happy to have a strong partner on our side in Nissan and a competitive car in the GT-R.”
Even though the team has not confirmed any driver names for the upcoming season, although Karl Wendlinger is on the shortlist for the team. “We’ve been working together very well over the past three years. Continuing that would just be the logical consequence of it. In any case I’m in good spirits that a joint project will materialise,” says Welti.
“It would be very nice if the cooperation with Othmar Welti were to continue, because he had a significant share in my success over the past three seasons,” says Wendlinger. “Negotiations are well underway – now the details need to be settled.”
