PK Carsport excluded from Zolder results

The outcome of the 2009 FIA GT Championship is still undecided. Last week a hearing at the FIA International Court of Appeal took place regarding the PK Carsport protest against a stewards decision from the Zolder race.

PK Carsport claimed that in the second Vitaphone pit stop more than the allowed number of mechanics were in the working area. While a decision was expected on Friday, no news came from Paris and waiting continued.

Unfortunately the legal proceedings did not come to an end today when the FIA announced decision 18 for the Zolder weekend. Rather than ruling on the pit stop infringement matter the FIA announced the exclusion of the #4 Corvette C6.R from the results. A bizarre twist in the story.

The exact text of Steward’s Decision 18 is:
“The Stewards, having received a report from the FIA Technical Delegate, that post race check of the engine of car no.4 the cylinder heads and the cylinder block are not in compliance with art. 258.5.2.1.
Because of absence of the 2nd FIA steward Mr Howard Lapsley and the National steward Mr. Roger Baele the proxy is given to Mr Richard Gabeler and Mr. Yves Bacquelaine.
After hearing the Technical Delegate Mr. Manuel Leal, the team manager Mr Jorge Segers and the witness Mr. Alex Roberge, and note the explanations of GM Racing from December lst the stewards decided to exciude car no 4 from the race results.”

After PK Carsport was reminded of its right of appeal the Belgian team did just that, which means that the decision by the International Court of Appeal will most likely be followed by another hearing (or more). Fortunately for the Belgian team the gap to the third placed SRT Corvette is big enough not to lose its second place in the championship and therefore its automatic entry for the Le Mans 24 Hours.

To be continued…unfortunately.

  1. It just goes on and on eh heh heh. this really goes to show how slow and piss poor the fia system is at getting things done in a timely fashion. club racers would probably act better than this. it seems to me the higher up you go the more immature the people get, just look at the f1 scandals in recent years.

no offense to the pk guys, but calling a stall to the championship due to the number of people working on the car is a bit of a sore loser tactic, especially considering the weak evidence they have to support the claim. unless there is clearly a significant number of extra people, say 2 or 3, then THAT would be a big deal. marcel do you know exactly how much people pk are claiming vitaphone had over the limit?

  2. The important question is WOULD vitaphone lose the championship if they are excluded from Zolder results?

If so, then that fact could cause some ‘creativity’ from the stewards to maintain the current championship results by excluding both.

    I know it’s a wild guess but…
    any thoughts?

  3. Not really a wild guess knowing the FIA-in fact I would say it’s plausible, they could push to the public in a way as saying: you both are babies stop bickering and slap the wrists of the both o’ ‘em. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen this happen somewhere before, in the not too distant past, at Le Mans specifically.
