Porsche confirms 2010 plans…and more!

Porsche held its ‘Night of Champions’ last night at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen. Dirk Werner was awarded the Porsche Cup for the most successful driver of privately-entered race cars and Porsche confirmed its plans for 2010 and possibly beyond.

Wolfgang Dürheimer, Member of the Executive Board for Research and Development, confirmed that Porsche still regards GT racing as highly important: “We at Porsche are keen that GT sport enjoys steady, long-term development. Indispensable pre-requisites for this are stable regulations, predictability, cost control – and common regulations between the F.I.A. and A.C.O. organisations.”

Porsche AG’s CEO Michael Macht, who took over from Wendelin Wiedeking back in July, also made it clear that Porsche will remain committed to motorsport and even mentioned a possible return to Le Mans in the near future. “Motorsport is a central element of our company’s DNA. And it will hold an important role in the future. I’m not the only one at Porsche to be tempted to race for overall victory again at the Le Mans 24 hour race.”

Despite not confirming a prototype project or a date the fact that Macht used these exact words makes it quite clear that a project is in the making. In recent years comments like this would not have been made. With new regulations in place for 2011 it could well mean that Porsche will take over from Audi at Le Mans then…

Porsche also confirmed it will place some of its works drivers at several customer teams in series around the world. In the American Le Mans Series Jörg Bergmeister and Pat Long will again race a Flying Lizard Motorsports Porsche 997 GT3 RSR, hoping to defend its 2009 championship title.

In Europe Marc Lieb and Richard Lietz will also be together again to defend their Le Mans Series title with Team Felbermayr Proton, while Patrick Pilet will again be racing for IMSA Performance Matmut in the Le Mans Series.

Next to its GT2 confirmations Porsche also confirmed there will be six new Porsche GT3 Cup series. The GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East, which makes its debut this weekend, will be joined by Great Britain, Japan, Scandinavia, Turkey and Switzerland.

For Porsche Cup winner Dirk Werner, who also received a Porsche 911 GT3 worth around 120,000 Euro, it was probably the last time he attended a ‘Night of Champions’, considering the fact that he will race for BMW next year.
Second place in the 2009 Porsche Cup went to Raymond Narac, while Richard Westbrook was third in the cup.

  1. Porsche is definatly working on a LMP1 for 2011 and the company is checking all options for the future but one option is that Porsche will take the sportscar programm and Audi will focus on DTM and GT3. That would make sense in terms of resources due Audi was on their limit this season and the result at le mans was obvious… not perfect. That could be a reason as well by Porsche why they have no more resources for running the Spyders… All power into LMP1 with a hybrid technologie..

  2. Porsche isn’t lacking any resource to run the RS Spyders at all. They just choose not to.

  3. This is the only reason why I respect Porsche, is becasue of there racing DNA. But Porsche street cars are boring, I have no intress in Porsche street cars. And now that VW has taken over Porsche, I think it’s a bad move.

I think Porsche entered LMP2 first of all to earn money. They developed a customer/client vehicle and to make sure it would win they include massive factory support to any privateer who buys the car. It is a sure winner, but costs 2 to 3 times as much as say a Zytek or a Lola. Furthermore they studied the current rulebook and concluded that diesel advantages are too great in LMP1 and unwilling to field a diesel they decided to go for LMP2.

  4. @Cristophè,

‘But Porsche street cars are boring’

You obviously haven’t driven or owned one, else you wouldn’t make such a dumb remark. Porsches are as boring as a night out with Megan Fox or a snowboard descent from the southface of the Matterhorn,i.e. NOT.

There’s a reason why the 911 still is the benchmark of all sportscars and a very solid reason why Porsche won Le Mans 16 times and basically holds all the track records there as well.

I for one can’t wait to see them return to fight for the topspot. I was there when they won 1-2 in ‘98 against massive opposition. Best race I ever saw at Le Mans and won by one of the alltime best lookers ever to race the track.

  5. I really don´t like Porsches that much, I like Corvettes and Ferraris, but it´s good for sport car races to have companies like Porsche and many others, more cars of diferent brans, better races.

  6. @GTfour

I still stick by my words about Porsche. Come 2020, the 911 will still look the same, and also they will still be playing catch up to Ferrari. Becasue Ferrari always sets the benchmarks (with there street cars) and guess who is always playing catch up?

Yes, my father and uncle was also at the 1998 24 Heures du Mans.

Overall I do respect Porsche, becasue of its racing history, and passion. But there street cars are another story.

  7. I respect anyone’s opinion, but stating ‘that Porsche streetcars are boring’ simply means one lacks the experience of driving one. I’ve driven a 944 S2,928 S4,911 Carrera(’76),930,RUF BTR,Boxster,Boxster S and a 968CS and let me tell you, everyone who’s been in one of these cars driving at speed simply can’t keep the statement ‘boring’ standing.
Don’t get me wrong,I love sportscars but I’d never take a Ferrari on a trans europe holiday trip for it’ll break down somewhere! I would take a Corvette though,’love them. AND they’re reliable…

    Oh,I forgot,I also drove a 996 GT3 S1,now THAT was a spectacular drive…

  8. @Christophe and @GTfour. I have to agree with GTFour that Porsche street cars are NOT boring from a driver perspective. They are truly exciting cars to drive.

Perhaps Christophe is referring more to the fact that the basic look of the 911 has not changed that much since 1965. BUT in fact this is part of the alure of the porsche. The 911 shape has not changed that much because porsche did a great job at design and engineering to start.

Now, if you’re looking for the real future, to go head to head with Ferrari on GT and street racing, that might come in the form of something like a Cayman GTR. This mid engined porsche could set a new standard with increased power output.

Also, the great thing about Porsche street cars: they a produced side by side with Porsche sports cars such as the Gt3 and Gt3 cup and RSR cars. There are very few companies that produce street and race cars on the same line and which cars have so much shared lineage. Also, what’s not to like about getting a true supercar for sub $150K. You can’t really get that from Ferrari…

  9. But the Corvette’s cheap plastic bodywork will probably melt under the sun :P

  10. @ Kyle,

    LOL!

    @Jake,

You’re right about the factory line producing the GT3 RS and GT3 Cup,but the RSR is build in Weissach ;-)

  11. no really they do build fascinating cars from a drivers standpoint, just try out the new 997 turbo facelift ,it damn
sure is a hell of a roadcar and still you can drive it like
    golf to work …
if this is technically really a fascinating object ,under the skin …well compared to the red ones ,sure.

  12. The Corvette would be more reliable and has outstanding fuel mileage. It can even take regular at the pump.

If a Porsche took a cross country trip accross the US, it would need major engine work from the dealership afterwards.

  13. Well I dont like both Porsche and Corvette. I would take the new Dodge SRT10 ACR, they are making a come back :)

    Posted by Christophè | December 15, 2009, 2:04
  14. The dodge is a caveman’s car. The side exhaust pipes can burn you, and in the summer time the A/C is barely enough to ward off the engine’s heat. It’s just an unrefined beast compared to the porsche, ferrari, and corvettes.

There’s no 21rst century tech in that car. People don’t spend 100,000 to look like brutes while with their trophy girlfriend or wife.

I still miss the Penske RS Spyders. I remember meeting Romain Dumas and Timo Bernhard after they came 4th in Detroit (belle isle) in 2008. Romain got excited after I said they still had petit lemans to claim the title. Timo was rather quiet, maybe because I was more of a fan of Dumas.

  15. @bamba,

“The Corvette would be more reliable and has outstanding fuel mileage. It can even take regular at the pump.

If a Porsche took a cross country trip accross the US, it would need major engine work from the dealership afterwards.”

HAAAAhahahaaaa! You’re just as funny as @Christophè!
Saying that a 6L V8 has ‘outstanding fuelmilage’ is like saying Liz Taylor allways was a reeeally faithfull wife. You really crack me up. Only an american could state this :D

Again we’re dealing here with someone who’s never actually owned a Porsche or driven one for a subtantual time, otherwise one wouldn’t be as silly to say that a Porsche would need a major engine overhaul after just a couple of thousand miles… You probably mean Ferrari. ;-)

  16. Yeah we all are internatinal, and saying making funny statements

We have the cazy petrolhead French guy (me)

    The American (Bamba)

    @GTfour where are you from?

And dont know where everybody else is from…

    Posted by Christophè | December 16, 2009, 8:05
  17. @Christophè,

    I’m dutch mate ;-)

  18. Check the stats on the corvette. The engine barely does any work in 6th gear. I’m not making it up. And the Corvette is less maintenance. I don’t own any of those cars but I would know.
