Extreme Speed Motorsports, the new race team created and owned by veteran race car driver Scott Sharp, revealed today its driver lineup for the American Le Mans Series’ GT class in 2010. The announcement follows a successful day of testing the team’s first new Ferrari F430 GTC on Wednesday at Sebring International Raceway – the car’s first run on American soil after arriving from the factory in Italy.

“The Ferrari F430 is beautiful and definitely one of the best handling cars I have ever driven,” Sharp said. “The team is incredibly enthusiastic about our relationship with Ferrari, and I’m very excited that we are already hitting the track, testing.”

The team will compete with two cars, one piloted by Sharp and Johannes van Overbeek, and the other with Ed Brown and Guy Cosmo behind the wheel. Tequila Patrón, a longtime supporter of motorsports racing, has signed on as a sponsor, along with Ferrari Corse Clienti and the team’s official tire technical partner Michelin.

Scott Sharp
Sharp, who last season helped Patrón Highcroft Racing bring home the American Le Mans Series’ LMP1 championship and three victories, began racing karts at the early age of 8. His celebrated career on the track has included racing in Champ Car, and the Indy Racing League (including nine IndyCar event wins and 35 top-five finishes, along with 14 Indianapolis 500 starts) before he began competing in the American Le Mans Series in 2008.

Johannes van Overbeek
Sharp’s partner Johannes van Overbeek began his racing career at age 23, purely as a hobby. He has since become one of the world’s top-ranked Porsche drivers, competing in the American Le Mans GT2 series with Flying Lizard Motorsports since 2005. He has amassed six wins in the Series and has finished in the top-five 54 times in 77 starts. He was the recipient of the 2007 Porsche Cup as the world’s top independent Porsche driver.

“I’m very excited about joining ESM and Patrón in the ALMS. Scott has been working tirelessly to ensure that we have all the tools in place to be successful,” commented van Overbeek. “Having been a part of a successful start-up team in the past, I know it won’t be easy but I look forward to contributing to ESM’s long-term success and working hard to ensure that Patrón’s investment in the team and the Series is maximized.”

Ed Brown
Ed Brown will drive the team’s other full-time Ferrari F430 GTC, with partner Guy Cosmo. Brown is formerly a Patrón GT3 Challenge by Yokohama driver who made his debut in the American Le Mans Series in 2009 in the Challenge class with ORBIT Racing. Brown’s best finish in the GT Challenge class last season was in the runner-up spot at Lime Rock Park.

“There’s no one in racing today more passionate and committed to this sport than Scott Sharp, and I can’t think of anyone else I’d rather be racing with than the talented and professional team we’ve assembled here,” said Brown.

Guy Cosmo
Guy Cosmo, 2005 American Le Mans Series Rookie of the Year and also a former ORBIT Racing driver, competed last season in the No. 47 Porsche 911 GT3. He finished the season 3rd in the Challenge class championship qualifying on the pole three times. Cosmo has 19 starts in the American Le Mans Series, finishing in the top-five 17 times and has been on the winner’s podium twice. In addition to being an accomplished driver, Cosmo is also a highly sought-after driving instructor.

“Joining Scott Sharp’s Extreme Speed Motorsports for the 2010 American Le Mans Series GT2 championship is a great opportunity,” added Cosmo. “This program is exactly what I’ve wanted to be part of for several years now. It’s the ultimate trifecta; Patrón-sponsored, Ferrari-driven, and in the American Le Mans Series. What more could a driver ask for? I’m really looking forward to contributing to the team and making this program a success.”

Michelin is the recognized leader in developing technologies that help provide the right tires for competitive motorsports.

“Extreme Speed Motorsports is thrilled to add Michelin as a technical partner to our team,” Sharp added. “After driving on Michelins for the last two seasons, I know how important it is to run on the best tires out there, and having them on our cars will immediately bring confidence to everyone on the team.”

“This is such an incredible time!” Sharp continued. “We have been able to formulate an incredibly strong team in short order, but not only do we have the best drivers in racing, we also have unbelievable support from the league, and from our partner sponsors. What a combination – Patrón, Ferrari and Michelin – the premium brands in each of their markets.”

The American Le Mans Series will open its 12th season with America’s greatest sports car race, the 58th Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring presented by Fresh from Florida from March 17-20. The green flag will fall at 10:35 a.m. on Saturday, March 20 with live coverage on SPEED.

The annual American Le Mans Series Winter Test is scheduled for February 22-23, also at Sebring International Raceway.

  1. What was wrong with the original name ‘Sharpspeed’? It had a ring, ‘extreme speed’ sounds generic and childish.

  2. Johannes Van overbeck??. I used to think he couldn’t just be happy being confined to the second lizard car. After all he has the speed and skill to win races. So playing second fiddle to the lead 45 “factory” car must have been humbling sometimes.

Risi won’t have to fight 5 on 1 anymore. The other factory cars came in pairs except the ferrari. That makes a difference.

  3. Ya, maybe FB-Loles should do the same and get a second car and maybe that might help them. Think about it: Vettes- 2 cars, BMW- 2 Cars, Lizards- 2 Cars. Guess what, they all won races. Risi only one the Enduro’s. FB-Loles didn’t win at all this season. That second car must really mean a lot!

  4. I also feel bad for Guy Cosmo. He almost one the Challange championship and with his new co-driver the car will probably be a lap down before he even gets in the car. I mean Brown is improving a lot, however he still will really only be competitive to Seth Nieman and the Viper!

  5. We wont be seeing Farnbacher Loles again.

  6. Gregory Loles the team principal is involved in some kind financial misconduct.

  7. One less Porsche and 2 more ferraris. Now the question is where will Dirk Werner drive (FIA GT, GRand Am still, ALMS, LMS…). He’s one of the most wanted GT drivers.

Guy Cosmo won’t mind as long as a check is coming in. Ed Brown has everyone’s wallet very well padded.

It’s like Klaus Graf with the Muscle Milk team. He could drive for anybody, but since Greg Pickett keeps him well off he’s happy. Same for Johnny Cocker at Drayson racing and Nic Jonsson at Krohn Racing.

  8. Dirk Werner will be driving for BMW with the GT2 car in Europe.

  9. will FB-Loles atleast be at Daytona? He still owns the hankook sponsered team right? i wonder if bHe’ll be at Daytona with a Hankook Porsche…

  10. Greg Loles is on the run from Police for large scale fraud, the race shop has already been cleaned out, like i said, we will not be seeing Farnbacher Loles again.

  11. i think a pro team with sharp and van overbeck and a full gnetlemen team would have been a better choice. Cosmo is a glorified drivers ed instructor. Ferrari should have insisted to not look so desperate to field cars.

  12. Horst Farnbacher (Dominique Farnbacher’s dad) owns the Hankook sponsored team (the european branch) They field 3 cars in the LMS (only one is hankook sponsored). The US branch was a partnership between Horst and Greg Loles.

I don’t think ferrari is desperate to field cars, they can easily raise up a support team for Risi (they brought over AF Corse at Sebring 2009) or sponsor a second car. The ferrari challenge series is doing so well, they only need to win the major events in endurance for added prestige.

In the LMS or FIA GT Sharp and Overbeck would be a solid combo but in the ALMS not so sure. We’ll have to wait and see.

  13. @Bamba: You know so much about sports car racing. You must be going alot of reserch or something. I think here in Europe, the Ferrari Challenge Series will also be on the same weekend at some of the FIA GT races. I dont know who runs the Ferrari Challenge series in NA.

Hey do you know anything about the 458 Italia GT2?

    Posted by Christophè | December 19, 2009, 21:11
  14. 458 gt2 will run next year in 2011….i’m sure patron will buy two of them for sharp. I bet risi wishes they hit the same lottery that sharp has with patron money.

  15. Well, thanks Christophe. I just like the sport. Pourrait tu croire que je parle aussi francais?

GRand Am runs the ferrari challenge. IMSA runs the GT3 cup challenge (with Porsches).

Risi should be running the 458 in 2010. It will be heavier than the 430 (maybe on par with the 911) so their restrictors should finally be equal.

The ferrari used to have a smaller restrictor since it was lighter. I don’t think the weight advantage helped them much on the straights.

Mika, Extreme speed will be buying and borrowing parts from Risi, just like Tafel was doing. Risi’s #62 car is glued to the factory’s pocket book. Risi gets new parts before any other ferrari team (US is ferrari’s biggest market).

    Posted by bamba | December 20, 2009, 8:19
  16. There will be no 458’s until 2011.

    Posted by Kyle | December 20, 2009, 14:16
  17. bamba, i dont think so. this a competitive team with risi. micheletto will supply both and extreme has WAY more money. look at all the patron efforts in motorsports. that is why sharp already got his 2010 430 gtc and risi has not.

  18. @Bamba
I know that Farnbacher owns the LMS team, it has nothing to do with Loles. Again, this is what i am saying, i wonder if he (Farnbacher, not Loles) will run the Hankook-Team farnbacher (or his other LMS teams) in the Rolex series or ALMS since FB-Loles went under. I know we wont be seeing FB-Loles anymore, but what about Farnbacher by himself…

    Posted by Dan | December 20, 2009, 17:33
  19. I guess if Hankook pays up they will be running it. Hankook is writing the checks for that venture.

    Posted by bamba | December 20, 2009, 19:11
  20. Extreme speed has tried and tested parts for their cars. Risi will be getting developmental parts.

Their car will be getting newer parts all season round. Risi’s F430’s inner components will be parts in testing (getting ready for the 458). It will be heavier and have have a bigger restrictor.

  21. I am going to miss the F430 GT2.

Most likely 2010 will be the last year for the F430 GT2. Hopefully we get the wins at the major endurance races, and also championships. The F430 GT2 will go out in style.

What about in the FIA-GT3 Series? 458 or the 430 Scuderia?

@Bamba haha yes, alot of people seems to know French.

    Posted by Christophè | December 20, 2009, 22:03
  22. OK, all comments aside. Let’s see some photos of the Patron Ferrari’s. There has to be some Ferrari Red in there somewhere.

  23. Van Overbeck not in a Porsche, what? even his name says he should be driving a car with the engine Over-back! This Lizzards fan wants two cars next season! And Bamba, i think the argument about Pickett and Graf is moot as it is rumored that Porsche is going to put factory support into that team and employ their own drivers – Dumas and Bernard (that is the only French i know!)

    Posted by Chris | December 22, 2009, 13:58
  24. I was just giving an analogy, that fast drivers can be persuaded to settle for a well paying gig than a competitive ride (job security can rule the heart).

Klaus Graf is simply one of them. He is very fast, but with greg pickett the car can’t be setup too aggressively.

The team is very well funded, so it’s not far fetched to see Porsche wanting to have them campaign a second car. That would actually be nice for the series.

    Posted by bamba | December 22, 2009, 18:18
  25. @Chris, and we shall get 2 Lizards next year, Neiman/Law Bergmeister/Long

    Posted by Kyle | December 22, 2009, 18:26
  26. Graf is definately fast to be sure- a jewel to have on any team. However the rumor was though that Porsche will only give support to one RS spyder, which makes no sense to me at all. They are right to give factory support to Cytosport because right now that team is running the most advanced form of Porsche motorsportscars (in the RS Spyder), but should not completely interupt the delicate dichotomy of the already proven team. Why not? because if a complete take-over is what’s coming it is likely to only be a short term relationship- because the OTHER BIG RUMOR is that the Porsche needs to knock the rust off before their triumphant return to LM in a P1 prototype YAY!!! possibly as early as 2010 LM, but more likely in 2011. What better way to keep their edge sharp than by backing a succesful RS Spyder Team (the P1 platform is rumored to be based upon the P2 Spyder anyway). So in summation, if Cytosport can sponge valuable information from Porsche next year without relying too heavily on them to succeed after they leave, it could be a win-win for both parties. Highcroft was going to keep going with or without Acura, so its not unheard of…
