LM Intercontinental Cup

Peugeot unlikely to join Intercontinental Cup

Autosport magazine is reporting that Peugeot Sport is unlikely to enter a works car in the new Le Mans Intercontinental Cup. The British magazine has revealed that the French manufacturer will instead focus on the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June and on the development of a new car for 2011.

With Audi confirming its participation in the Le Mans Intercontinental Cup last month there was hope that Peugeot would join in, but Head of Peugeot Sport Olivier Quesnel has now confirmed there will unlikely be a factory entered Peugeot after Le Mans, although the complete program for 2010 will not be confirmed until February.

“The board has given me a budget with two objectives: to do our best with the current car at Le Mans and to build a new car for 2011,” said Quesnel. “The Intercontinental Cup is a good idea, but we can’t do everything.”

Quesnel also confirmed the team’s interest in running Sebastien Loeb at Le Mans. The World Rally champion will test the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP again before a decision will be made whether or not to run him in the 78th edition of the La Sarthe classic.

  3. Any race ran in the US doesn’t really help Peugeot marketing wise. They don’t market any models in the US.

They run sebring to prepare for LeMans. As far as Petit LeMans they simply wanted another feather in their cap.

Besides Audi is part of VW which is a company twice the size of the Peugeot group. Peugeot has been hit harder than Audi by the recession. I think it’s understandable.

  4. If they (Peugeot) are going to lend a 908 to Oreca for Le Mans, perhaps Oreca could run the rest of the intercontinental cup as well.
If this happened and Oreca won, would Oreca stand to gain more by winning the intercontinental cup in a 908 than in their own car?
Or would they just be happy to win?

  5. I agee Bamba but that’s only currently they don’t sell cars in America, you never know they might return someday.

They were given a budget and if traveling to the US is not in their budget then so be it. There is also a race in Asia people forget, its not just about Sebring and Petit Le Mans.

Besides the ALMS won’t get Audi for a second season, all the other Acuras are in Europe, that leaves a very thin field for Sebring in LMP.

Two cars stand a realistic shot at winning ANYTHING most of the season next year and that’s Highcroft and Corsa, I don’t see how Intersport can keep it on the black stuff long enough to be a constant threat.

  6. So Dyson (either 1 or 2 entries) has no chance with a package that’s been proven on both sides of the Atlantic (Lola – they even had some of their better years with those chassis’ in the past)? And the strong possibility of the bio-butanol that seriously improved the Mazda’s reliability late last year being accepted in the ALMS?

I think that if the Intersport guys would just set their car up to handle a little better in the turns and give up the “fast on the straight” concept to such an extent, their could be a number of possible teams challenging for podiums and wins each race.

  7. Oreca would just be glad to win. Throughout their history they’ve always ran programs for manufacturers, just like team Joest, Penske and Champion racing.

Dyson I think will be the lead challenger to Highcroft. But there is a rumored Porsche Spyder with full factory lineup.

But if Johnny cocker starts a few races the drayson car will get some glory at least until the driver change. Same for the Muscle milk car if Klaus Graf starts. But unfortunately the rule of thumb is “whoever pays goes first, or whomever he chooses”.

Hopefully the bosses go with the last part. Slim chance, but it might happen.

A lot of Lolas out there.
