Team Bruichladdich star Thor-Christian Ebbesvik was hospitalised following a big shunt during the Spa 1000 km.
A hard meeting with the wall at the Bus Stop chicane, which followed on from being hit from behind by a GT car, led to a lengthy safety car as the Norwegian was removed from the car before being taken to the circuit medical centre, and then onwards to Verviers hospital.
Complaining of significant back pain, Christian has a fractured vertebra although will hopefully be well enough to travel home to Norway early in the week where he will be able to undertake specialist consultation in order to assess his recovery for the Le Mans 24 Hours
The Team Bruichladdich Zytek had started from 50th place on the starting grid, following an engine failure on the first lap of qualifying, and had moved up to a stunning 13th place overall after just 12 laps of green flag racing, an amazing improvement of 37 positions!
Despite having to scythe through traffic on every lap, Christian had set a fastest lap at the time of the crash quicker than every other LMP2 car which started in front of him on the grid.
Commenting afterwards, Christian said:
The track conditions were difficult but I just had to get on with it without taking excessive risk.
The car was superbly balanced and I was able to come right through the field, and I am just sorry the team never got the result it deserved.
I thought I had left the Aston Martin enough room, but I got a hefty whack up the back followed by a hard meeting with the wall.
I am quick healer, so hopefully will be OK for Le Mans, as I am really looking forward to that race.
