Shortly after the finish of the 78th Le Mans 24 Hours it became clear that the battle in the LM GT2 category had ended on track, but was likely to go ahead beyond Le Mans. Today the Automobile Club de l’Ouest informed the teams that the classification is indeed not final.
The first placed number 77 Team Felbermayr Proton Porsche 997 GT3 RSR (Marc Lieb, Richard Lietz and Wolf Henzler) and the #89 Hankook Team Farnbacher Ferrari F430 GT2 (Dominik Farnbacher, Allan Simonsen and Leh Keen) did not immediately clear scrutineering at Le Mans and this afternoon the technical delegate of the ACO, Daniel Perdrix confirmed that the engines on both cars will be undergoing further checks.
It is expected that the results of these inspections will be announced in early July. As a result the full LM GT2 classification is now suspended, as are the general classification and the Michelin Green X Challenge classification from the first LM GT2 car.
If the ACO finds nothing irregular on the two cars the results will stay as they are. Should there be something irregular they could be excluded and that could promote the BMS Scuderia Italia Porsche 997 GT3 RSR to first place, with AF Corse and IMSA Performance Matmut taking second and third.
To be continued…
So Richard Westbrook MIGHT get a class win after all…..
(That’s an early shot in the article; Mansell is still running….)
First I’ve heard of it!
Thats a shame, since I thought the Farnbacher Ferrari did a particularly good job and played a David amongst the multiple Goliaths of the GT2 field. I also quite like Dominik.
Would be a shame for both.
The #89 Farnbacher Ferrari did a solid job, both on Nurburgring and on Mans. In both there were stonger opponents (Audis, Porsches, Ferraris, Corvettes…) but they proved that they had the endurance spirit, and they clinched 2nd on both.
And the Proton Porsche deserved the win. 3 great drivers, and finally a GT2 win for the 911 again !
Than again if BMS wins it will be a 911 as well. And with Timo Scheider winning on his debut ! Le Mans, always interesting
Porsche should race the Cayman instead of the 911! Also, SPEED needs more LM24 tv coverage!
@ william. On the results presented on the Lemans.org site: http://www.lemans.org/iframes/24hdumans/2010/chronos/2010_24_Heures_du_Mans_24_Heures_du_Mans_Race_24h_Definitif.pdf (PDF), the top of the form already mentioned that the results for the first two cars in the GT2 class were provisional. Is is a pity though, I liked it with the Porsche and the Ferrari the way they finished.
BMW could win this thing yet!
And what about these smoking diesels? Is it allowed to smoke like a truck?
No they can’t
Don’t panic, guys. The ACO already announced BEFORE THE RACE that the first two of GT2 class will be closely examined after the race, no matter which cars finish first and second. So this is just a normal procedure comparable to maybe a doping test in some other sport.
Just wondering, will Porsche upgrade there GT2 Porsche? Like a new body or something? Cause I see this current Porsche racing in GT2 class for a good min.
