1000 KM of Silverstone: 47 cars currently on the list

A total of 47 cars are entered for the Autosport 1000 KM of Silverstone, the final race of the season for the Le Mans Series and the first ever race of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup. A full field sees familiar names returning -including Peugeot and Audi – but nevertheless the entry list is in some way still a bit disappointing.

Twelve LMP1 cars, twelve LMP2 cars, seven FLM cars, two GT1 cars and fourteen GT2 cars are currently on the list for the race that will be held on September 12.

In LMP1 regular teams Rebellion Racing, Beechdean Mansell Motorsport, Team Oreca Matmut and Signature Plus will be joined by seven other prototypes. Aston Martin Racing will bring two of its Lola Aston Martins. Adrian Fernandez, Harold Primat and Andy Meyrick will race in the 007, for Meyrick it is his third different LMP car this season after the Oreca 01 and the Lola-Mazda. Juan Barazi and Sam Hancock will drive the second car, the 009.
Audi Sport Team Joest will bring two of its Audi R15 TDI for Kristensen/McNish and Capello/Bernhard, while Team Peugeot Total will bring one of its 908 HDi FAP cars for Davidson and Minassian.
The two remaining teams are British teams, with ALMS roots. Team LNT will enter a Ginetta-Zytek 09S for Tony Burgess, Chris McMurry and Johnny Mowlem, while Drayson Racing will head over from the US to enter its Lola Judd on what will be Paul Drayson and Jonny Cocker’s home race.

In LMP2 no additional teams will be joining. Like before OAK Racing and Racing Box will enter two cars each, RML, Race Performance, Pegasus Racing, RLR msport (with Simon Phillips replacing Warren Hughes), Quifel-ASM Team, Team Bruichladdich and Strakka Racing will all enter one. According to their own words KSM should also be present with the Lola Judd.

The only change in FLM – where seven cars are entered again – is that Warren Hughes is back together with Jody Firth. DAMS and Hope PoleVision Racing will again enter two cars, while Boutsen Energy Racing, JMB Racing and Applewood Seven will enter one.

Two Saleens are listed to race at Silverstone in the GT1 category. Larbre Competition’s Gardel, Goueslard and Rees are the ones on the list to fight the Atlas eFX Team FS Saleen S7R of Carlo van Dam, Zsolt Baumgartner and James Winslow, but the team’s participation is in doubt after the accident in Hungary.

Finally GT2. Fourteen cars are on the list for Silverstone, one more than we had at the Hungaroring, despite Felbermayr-Proton going back again to being a two-car team with Lieb and Lietz the main contender for the title. No changes at ProSpeed Competition, IMSA Performance Matmut, Hankook Team Farnbacher, Spyker Squadron, JMW Motorsport and at CRS Racing and AF Corse the number of cars remains the same but Kaffer, Bruni and Melo return to the two teams.
BMW Team Schnitzer returns with a single entry, the number 78 BMW M3 for Jörg Müller and Dirk Werner, while Gulf Team First makes its entry into the series with a Lamborghini LP560 for Fabien Giroix and Roald Goethe.

So why is this still a somewhat disappointing list? Okay, 47 cars is not bad, but we’ve had this number before when it was not an Intercontinental Le Mans Cup race. The number of teams joining from the American Le Mans Series or from Asia are low to say the least, only Drayson Racing actually coming over for its home race. While Audi at least brings two of its cars with top line-ups Peugeot will bring one car to join the Oreca entry, while it will have two cars in the US and China. Add to that no additional entries in LMP2, GT1 and GT2 and you know why.

  1. i’d say thats a pretty diverse and decent line up,47 entries is pretty good. looking forward to seeing the lola astons again and the lambo gallardo in gulf livery. can’t wait!

  2. Diverse field..yes
Decent line up with 47 entries..yes

Nevertheless a bit disappointing as there are no American or Asian teams joining. Makes you wonder how many regular entries will make the trip to Asia later this year.

  3. I thought Gulf Team First were at Spa 24h with GT3 Lambos… (?) Is it actually the GT2 car that Reiter ran last year at Spa 1000k?

  4. There are many reason why there’s no american entries: As of now in auto racing the ALMS is only behind F1 and Nascar in TV coverage. That said, the ILMC doesn’t quite interest the american teams too much…until TV coverage gets significantly better. for european and asian races.

A season in the ALMS is much costlier than any other sportcar series, and there’s barely any compensation. Factories get nothing at all.

And even if ALMS teams wanted to race for the fun of it there’s plenty of competitive alternatives just in the US alone.

I think those are a few of the reasons.

  5. TV coverage for the LMS is dire at best and pathetic at worse. Teams just don’t get the coverage sponsors require.

Even if we had live web streaming that would be a start. I predict there will be between 20,000 and 30,000 spectators at the race so surely enough to warrant more TV coverage?

  6. @Ian: LMS TV coverage is pathetic period!

@Bamba: With or without TV coverage, US Teams are always very contrary to any other kind of race besides their own… just look at Le Mans! By the way… why do you think that most of their sports championships are called World Series? US is the world… the rest is their backyard! How many US team are in F1? GT1? WRC? WTCC? and so on…

@Marcel: ILMC will be made at the expense of European Teams. Even factory teams are almost all european… do not expect to see US Team anywhere besides ALMS, but even those (the europeans), without promoters costing travelling (like in all world championships) cant go to asia or america. For the ILMC impose as a world series, attracting the average joe racing fan, there must be a single entrie list for all races, sponsors paying travelling costs, decent TV coverage (or full Web livestreaming)… For me, its a dream that comes reality that i have been waiting since 93, but it wont last if the team have to pay for it! The best we can get is to see the factory teams doing all the races, plus 1 or two strong privateer, but it wont be enough to maintain the series for long.

  7. I think there needs to be major changes in the TV/Online coverage for all ALMS, LMS, and Asian LMS. Right now.. i dont think theres anyway to watch Asian LMS unless your actually their at the track.

Then the next thing to do is trying to get teams to actually travel across the world to go to all these races… if the ACO agrees to help support travel costs for the smaller teams, and maybe even Audi and Peugeot to travel. Then MAYBE we might see more entries in the LMCUP.

The final is what Bamba said on another article is trying to eliminate the huge advantage diesals have over gasoline cars. If they do that.. alot more teams will go back to LMP1.

  8. The entry is much as the major teams and Autosport have been warming us up to in Europe and the UK for the last few months. We are often fortunate to get a good entry at Silverstone, but the point about lack of variety in the first round of what is hopefully to become a world championship in 2011 is well made.

Problem is it’s difficult to see the attraction of Silverstone this year for non UK based LMP1 teams unless they are LMS regulars. The continued advantage allowed to the diesels by the ACO is too great to warrant the expenditure by ALMS or Asian LMS teams in tough economic conditions. And differences in the ALMS and FIA regulations for LMP2’s, GT1’s and GT2’s don’t help, but have been necessary for the success of those series.

Perhaps the bigger markets of the US and Asia will encourage a more diverse entry in rounds 2 and 3 ? Petit is usually shown on TV at length in the UK and is a great race. In the meantime we’ll enjoy Silverstone.

  9. It’s an awful shame that the GT1 field is as small as this for their final race. Where is the Luc Alphand Corvette and the AMR Young Driver Aston? Even a Ford GT would’ve been nice. Still, good to see Peugeot and Audi showing up after last year.
