Plowman, Heinemeier Hansson to driver for Conquest Endurance

Martin Plowman and David Heinemeier Hansson will form a strong driving duo for the new Conquest Endurance team during its first season of LMP2 prototype competition in the 2012 American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón.

IZOD IndyCar Series veteran Plowman and sports-car veteran Heinemeier Hansson will drive the No. 37 Conquest Endurance Morgan-Judd LMP2 beginning with the prestigious 60th Anniversary of the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Fueled by Fresh from Florida on Saturday, March 17 at Sebring, Fla.

A third driver will join the team next month for Sebring and the 15th running of the Petit Le Mans in October at Road Atlanta.

“When we announced the expansion of our operation with the formation of Conquest Endurance in December, I knew we had a lot of work to do to be ready for Sebring,” said Eric Bachelart, Conquest Endurance team owner. “Finding drivers was on high on that ‘to do’ list.

“Martin really impressed me in his three starts in the IZOD IndyCar Series last season, so I am very happy to have him join Conquest. David’s solid racing resume, combined with his off-track success, tells me he is a focused individual who will complement Martin in the cockpit.”

Englishman Plowman, 24, made three starts for Sam Schmidt Motorsports as a rookie in the 2011 IZOD IndyCar Series, with a best finish of 11th on the streets of Baltimore. He was a Firestone Indy Lights standout in 2009-10, finishing third in the standings and winning at Mid-Ohio in 2010.

“I’m really excited to get started with Conquest Endurance at Sebring,” Plowman said. “I always have respected the way Eric and Conquest go racing in INDYCAR, as he is one of the good guys in this sport. This is a great opportunity for me to drive a prototype in the ultra-competitive ALMS. I know that I have a lot to learn about endurance-style racing, but I am calm and ready for the challenge. I’m definitely going to make the most ofit.”

Danish-born Heinemeier Hansson, 32, has put his sports-car career on a fast track since his first race in 2009. He drove in selected ALMS, Intercontinental Le Mans Cup, IMSA and GRAND-AM events in 2010-11, teaming with such sports car standouts as Johnny Mowlem, James Rossiter and Dominik Farnbacher.

Heinemeier Hansson also is a successful, multi-faceted entrepreneur. He is the creator of the popular open-source Web development framework Ruby on Rails, a partner in the Web-based software development firm 37signals and co-author of the New York Times best-selling business book “Rework.”

“I’m thrilled to take part in Conquest’s new endurance program,” Heinemeier Hansson said. “Everything I’ve heard of the team has been great. It’s fantastic to start my first full season in ALMS with a team that has such a long history in motor racing. Teams come and go all the time.   1. I wouldn’t call Plowman an “IndyCar veteran” – I guess he participated only in very few IndyCar races.
    What about Conquest’s participation in IndyCar racing? They were not at the tests, so they are probably concentrating on ALMS and maybe additionally participating at the Indy 500 only?

  2. I’ll take Plowman as an Indycar veteran over Heinemeier being a sports-car veteran after driving his first race in 2009.

  3. @kw, Conquest haven’t been testing because they are one of the teams that haven’t inked an engine deal yet, so if they race in IndyCar at all this year is up in the air.

  4. Conquest is the US dealer for the Morgan P2 chassis, formerly known as the Oak-Pescarolo P2 car.

    The best way to sell a race car is to showcase it by racing it. It better be priced right, because success might be tough since level 5 has those 2 Honda cars and aside from Scott Tucker, they also boast some of the best prototype drivers.

  5. I hope someone like Bertrand Baguette gets the 3rd seat for the enduros. I would have put him in before Plowman, personally. Plowman seems pretty good, but as GTurner said, not a “veteran”, like Baguette. Oh Well, still rooting for them and Starworks.

  6. Nice to see that the ALMS is seeing a return to “proper” (non-spec) prototype competition. Does anyone know the status of the Black Swan Racing P2?

    As for drivers, I really hope to see Damien Faulkner landing a good seat.

  7. @William Mound: Black Swan bought Level 5’s old Lola coupe and is expected to enter Sebring in the near future (according to John Dagys)

    Damien Faulkner is entered in Black Swan’s GTC car (entered under the banner of “Green Hornet Racing”) for the full season.

  8. Tim Papa’s would probably like Beekemolen for Sebring but Bleek prefers to fight with the big boys while driving the Rebellion car.

    But for Tim Pappas, there are plenty Ex Audi, and Ex Peugeot drivers out there who can be secured for the right bank transaction. And they’re more prototype savvy than Bleekemolen.

    I still remember Marco Werner giving a masterful performance at Sebring in 2010 to help Scott Tucker win the race and claim the LMPC title. Just watching him you just knew it was a master in complete control of the situation.
