Our Autosport International 2014 competition is now closed. We’ve drawn three winners from the correct entries and they will receive a mail today with details!
Now for the answer to the question when, where and in what event Mark Webber and Allan McNish raced each other for the first time.
We received lots of answers saying it was Le Mans in 1998. Even though it was the first time they went head to head at the Circuit de la Sarthe, it wasn’t the first time they raced each other.
That first encounter happened on April 12, 1998 in the Oschersleben 500 KM, the opening round of the 1998 FIA GT Championship. Those of you who had that answer…well done, even if you’re not one of the three lucky winners!
Driving the #1 AMG Mercedes Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Webber Mark Webber and Bernd Schneider finished the race in third place, while Allan McNish and his teammate Yannick Dalmas finished 15th in their Porsche AG Porsche 911 GT1-98.
Webber and Schneider ended the season with five wins in the FIA GT Championship at Silverstone, Hockenheim, Hungaroring, Suzuka and Donington. McNish scored podium finishes at Dijon, Hungaroring, Suzuka, Donington, A1 Ring and Homestead. But the highlight of the season for McNish was the 24 Hours of Le Mans where Porsche scored its record-breaking 16th overall win and the Mercedes-Benz CLK LM failed miserably – Webber’s car completed 19 laps and the second CLK LM retired after 31 laps.
We all know what happened then – Mercedes dominated GT1 in the FIA GT Championship, resulting in no other entries than Mercedes in 1999, forcing the FIA to cancel GT1. Mercedes went on to build the CLR, which then became infamous for its backflips in its only competitive outing at Le Mans.
Our competition winners are: (we’ll fill in the blanks when we get a positive reply from all three)
