Clouded skies again at Silverstone, as it has been the whole weekend. Apparently the chances of rain are slim but we cannot discard an unpleasant surprise on the weather department. Peugeot departs from the front row but Audi had not been as close the whole season, so this is promising. On the other classes very close fights in perspective on both GT classes, LMP2 with 3 different makes in the top 3… Stay with us as we report you minute by minute all the action from Silverstone!
The two Epsilon´s ee1 LMP1 reinforce their strength in the Le Mans Series Silverstone 1.000 km qualifying session. Miguel Angel de Castro, 5th in the morning free practice, missed to qualify his car after an accident. Excellent 7th place for car nr.21 of the couple Adrián Vallés/Shinji Nakano at the hands of Adrián.
Fifth position just behind the turbodiesels enjoying power advantage is the result of the Charouz Racing System team in the qualifying for the last race of the Le Mans Series 2008 in Silverstone. Stefan Mucke, who shares the the Aston Martin powered LMP1 prototype with Jan Charouz, set the time. The German driver said back in the pits that he could have been quicker if he had not lost one second in traffic. The whole team is still happy as the car is again best placed petrol engine.
The Spyker Laviolette’s will start from a 6th and 10th position in tomorrow’s ‘Autosport 1000 km of Silverstone’, the last round in this year’s Le Mans Series race season. The weekend started for the Dutch team with two free-practice sessions on Friday. Although the first free practice session was held in dry conditions, the two remaining sessions were completed on a damp track.
The two Audi R10 TDI cars of Audi Sport Team Joest will start to the finale of the European Le Mans Series at Silverstone (Great Britain) from the second row. Straight at the start of the 20-minute qualifying session Allan McNish set a time of 1m 31.020s (203.336 kph), which remained unrivalled for a long time. Just shortly before the end of the session the Audi driver was bumped to third place by the two Peugeot 908s to third on the grid. Alexandre Prémat in the “sister car” set the fourth-best time.
Van Merksteijn Motorsport by Equipe Verschuur, the already-crowned champions in the LMP2 category of the 2008 Le Mans Series, held up its 100 percent record in qualifying for the fifth and final round of the season, the Autosport 1000 Kilometres of Silverstone at the famous Northamptonshire Grand Prix circuit. A lap time of 1.34.212 minutes for Jos Verstappen at the 5.141 km long circuit secured the team its fifth pole position from as many LMS events this season.

A strong pole for Peugeot yet again at Silverstone, Stéphane Sarrazin was a mere 11/1000ths of a second quicker than team mate Nic Minassian completing a French lion front row ahead of the Audis. Anticipated champion Jos Verstappen grabbed yet another pole for the van Merksteijn Porsche in LMP2 . In GT1 the IPB Lamborghini was quickest with a very good lap from Peter Kox just ahead of the Modena Aston, Rob Bell on the Virgo Ferrari was the poleman in GT2 ahead of three Porsches.
In a pretty packed Silverstone Media Centre de A.C.O. unveiled their long awaited 2009 rules. Several team managers were present as the need for definition regarding next years’ plans is critical at this point. The main highlights include rebalancing the diesel vs petrol equivalence, reduce costs, increase safety and postpone the next rule revision to 2011 instead of 2010.
After a starting phase on a wet track, it started pouring at Silverstone completely altering the regular order of things. A somehow drying track towards the end of the session saw Marc Gené topping the times but a few minutes later Allan McNish simply pulverized the #7 Peugeot’s time and set the best time in 1.51.785, 3,5 seconds quicker than the Spanish’s 1.55.310.
